Sustainability

Cornerstone’s design seeks to highlight the relationship between the natural world and Fremont’s industrial past, taking significant steps toward creating a balanced yet thriving urban ecosystem.

Living Building Challenge Petals

The project is pursuing Living Building Challenge (LBC) Petal Certification through the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). The Materials, Beauty, and Place Petals achieve rigorous targets for use of non-toxic materials, and strengthen connections between humans and the natural world.

Materials

Red List-free, locally sourced, and reclaimed.

Beauty

Celebrating design that uplifts and inspires the human spirit.

Place

Integrating community, history, and the environment.

Seattle Living Building Pilot Program

The project also participates in Seattle’s Living Building Pilot Program, which provides height and floor area incentives for projects that meet high-performance sustainability goals. Through this program, CornerStone achieves significant reductions in energy and water use, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable design and environmental stewardship.

  • CornerStone meets Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) requirements by targeting a 100% reduction in potable use for non-potable applications, such as irrigation and toilet flushing. Learn More →

  • CornerStone’s design emphasizes energy efficiency through advanced daylighting strategies and a high-performance building envelope, targeting a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to baseline standards. Learn More →
